Disease in Virology by Chi Chun Lau

Virology is the scientific study of biological viruses. It is a subfield of microbiology that focuses on their detection, structure, classification and evolution, their methods of infection and exploitation of host cells for reproduction, their interaction with host organism physiology and immunity, the diseases they cause, the techniques to isolate and culture them, and their use in research and therapy. The diseases related to virology are the diseases that are caused by viruses. For example, flu, HIV and Covid-19.

Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. The flu is usually spread by breathing in droplets from coughs and sneezes that contain the virus. It can cause a severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some examples of the symptoms are fever, cough, runny nose and headaches. Vaccination is important to protect yourself from the flu.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is currently no effective cure. Once people get HIV, they have it for life. For many, yes. Most people have flu-like symptoms. But some people have no symptoms at all. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. If patients have proper medical care, HIV can be controlled.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. The virus spreads from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. Similar to flu, vaccination can protect you from the disease.

Besides these three, there are still many other diseases caused by viruses. They all spread and affect our bodies in a different way. Hopefully people who study virology can decrease the death that is caused by the viruses.
