Endocrinology is the study of hormones and endocrine glands and organs. Hormone-secreting glands and certain organs in your body make up your endocrine system. A hormone is a chemical messenger that travels from one endocrine gland or organ in your body to another part of your body through your blood. They help your body parts to communicate with each other.
Endocrinologists are healthcare providers who are experts and specialize in endocrinology. They diagnose, treat and manage several different conditions that affect your endocrine system. They can treat disorders of the endocrine system, which is the network of hormone-producing glands in your body. Some of the conditions they can treat are diabetes, thyroid diseases, infertility, growth issues, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, some cancers, and disorders in the hormone-producing adrenal glands and pituitary glands. Sometimes when problems in other systems or body parts affect the endocrine system, the endocrinologist would work with other primary care doctors or other specialists to come up with a treatment plan.
Endocrinology nurses are someone who specialize in the care of patients who have endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s disease. They treat patients in the hospital that have different hormonal issues. They also carry out orders prescribed by a physician or nurse practitioner such as treatment protocols and medications. They sometimes provide education and general care for the patient, too. Some endocrinology nurses also specialize. One of the examples is a pediatric endocrinology nurse.
Reproductive endocrinologists are fertility/infertility specialists. They are specially trained in providing fertility treatments using assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing. They can also use surgery, medicine, or procedures to treat infertility. These methods such as sperm banking and egg freezing that help keep a person’s ability to have children are called fertility preservation.
